What is Enhanced Protected Mode (EPM) error?

This error is received when Enhanced Protected Mode (EPM) is enabled. Adobe Acrobat basically does not support Internet Explorer's EPM.

Solutions:

(a) Solution 1: update Adobe Acrobat (generally, if the Acrobat version is relatively modern, the update will already include support for IE's EPM security feature.

(b) Solution 2: disable opening PDF files in the browser - this solution involves changing the settings in your Adobe Reader/Acrobat Pro

1. Open Adobe Reader/Acrobat Pro
2. Click on the 'Edit' menu then 'Preferences'
3. Click on the 'Internet' on the side bar
4. Under the 'Web Browser Options' untick 'Display PDF in browser'
5. Click 'OK' to save the changes

(c) Solution 3 - use Adobe Reader as your default PDF software. Adobe Reader has a built in EPM security feature, which would allow it to open the downloaded PDF file online to be opened using Adobe Reader automatically once the download sequence finishes.

1. Open Adobe Reader
2. Click on the 'Edit' menu then 'Preferences'
3. Click on 'General' on the side bar

4. Click on the button 'Select Default PDF Handler'

5. Click on the drop down box and select 'Adobe Reader...'

6. Click on 'Apply' and then 'OK' to exit out the dialogs
7. PDF files will now open in Internet Explorer, using Adobe Reader
